The study was assigned by the Municipality of Oreokastro, in 1996. The study consisted of two phases:
• The analysis of the existing situation and the development of preliminary proposals (Phase A’).
• The formulation of the final proposals (Phase B’).
The objectives of the study were the following:
• Formulation of proposals for improving connections and mobility between the areas.
• Formulation of a master traffic management plan.
The traffic data collection consisted of the following surveys:
• Identification of the existing land use and the urban characteristics of the area.
• Traffic volumes measurements in selected intersections of the road network.
• Identification of public transport system characteristics.
• Estimation of the parking demand and supply for on-street and off-street parking spaces.
• Survey of road accidents (last 3-year period).
• Survey of the characteristics of the existing road network (geometrical, pavement, etc).
The final proposals which derived from the modifications made on the preliminary ones, concerned the following issues:.
• Changes in the directions in some of the roads.
• Improvement of the geometrical characteristics in some of the intersections.
• Formulation of new parking policies.
• Introduction of measures for the improvement of the road safety level (especially for the users).
• Design of a pedestrian network.
• Introduction of traffic calming measures.
• Improvement of public transport service level (The introduction of mini-buses was proposed).
• Improvement of connections and mobility between city center and the under expansion areas of the city by introducing measures dealing with the urban characteristics of the city.
