Extension of the “General transportation and traffic study for the greater Thessaloniki area” contract

epektashCustomer: Organization for Planning and Env. Protection of Thessaloniki

Duration: August 2000 – August 2001

In the context of the study the issue of configuring an integrated policy framework for the public transports in Thessaloniki is examined in depth, aiming at the ensuring of the various means of transport complementarity, which are due to operate in the city by the target year 2005. Special emphasis is given on the Metro operation analysis with regard to the buses and the details of the policy to be followed are suggested, in terms of:
• the bus line network reformation
• the indigent invoicing policy
• the definition of the parking – transit areas
At the same time, and beyond the new works and infrastructure construction suggested in the context of the General Transportation Study of Thessaloniki, the direct study and implementation of limited interventions is possible, aiming at the road safety improvement and the implementation of traffic management measures for congested areas. More specifically, measures such as one way streets, completion of regulatory and traffic signaling, nodes canalization configuration, curfew or prevention of movements, facilitation and direction of passenger traffic and selective parking police in critical spots are suggested.
Finally, an extension of the traffic planning software was developed in such a way so that it includes operations such as the evaluation of environmental impacts and the calculation of indices with “tangible” context for the non-specialist of the transport and environmental planning, such as:
• population percentages that are exposed to certain atmospheric and noise pollution levels
• totals of litter emissions per zones or group of zones.

Role of TREDIT:
– Design and development of integrated Decision Support System for the measurement and the evaluation of the environmental impacts of alternative urban transport and traffic scenarios
– Formulation and implementation of an integrated Public Transport policy, Bus network planning
– Detection and programming of imminent projects and traffic management measures
