Customer: Greek Ministry of Transport

Duration: January 2000 – May 2001

The scope of this study was to propose supportive measures in order to achieve further development to the corridor ‘Adriatic Ionian’. In particular, this study predicted the definition, the evaluation and the hierarchy of specific interferences in order to upgrade this corridor with a modern combined transport system of freight and passengers.
This study was completed in three Phases, which include the followings: i) the detailed definition of the present conditions regarding the infrastructure of the corridor
ii) the definition of the legal system, and
iii) the development of a model, which estimates the future demand.
During Phase A, the study was focused on operational characteristics of the corridor with special attention to the infrastructure and provided services. The analysis of the data related with the present operational conditions of the corridor was focused to secure the necessary modern infrastructure.
During Phase B, the legal system of the transport sector, the existing progress in European level and the financial status of the companies, which were involved in the maritime sector, as well as the perspectives on how to improve the operation of the corridor with the help of new technologies for the monitoring and the management of the transport techniques, freight and vehicles have been studied. This procedure concluded to underline the problems and the weaknesses and support the process of selecting the measures.
During Phase C, after completing the evaluation, the measures were defined and finalized and they determined the final proposals of the feasibility study in order to develop the Adriatic Corridor of Combined transport. This Phase was the last phase of the feasibility study for the development of the combined transport system ‘Adriatic Ionian Corridor’ and consists of:
• The development of a model, which estimates the future demand in the corridor in regard with the competitor corridors, and
• The evaluation of the alternative scenarios, which was based on the multi-criteria analysis and the definition of the final proposals.
