Customer: Information Society Technologies (IST)

Duration: November 2000 – November 2003

SWAN is a thematic network project aiming at supporting IST RTD projects in the area of waterborne transport. In this respect project’s key objectives include:
– providing support and information to the supported projects concerning standards and pre-standards process in relevant areas,
– disseminating results with the development of a web site that will provide an on line discussion mechanism for all interested parties and the publication of state of the art reports on specific thematic areas,
– clustering of these projects around broad thematic areas of interest and forming of work groups in order to encourage flexible collaboration between the projects and facilitate the review of the state of art on important themes of common interest,
– supporting the projects with special focus on common tasks by coordinating activities aiming to develop a coherent and common approach of the projects
The SWAN objectives will be realised through:
– Information gathering of the work within the European projects that may result in a standards proposal. Information gathering on the results of the work undergone within the various subcommittees of the ISCBs in relation to the production of standards relevant to maritime information and telecommunication systems/ networks
– Development of a web site and maintaining it during the whole duration of the project. SWAN WWW site will be used as a discussion area to develop consensus on the issues of interest to the IST RTD projects as well as disseminating all relevant material of the supported projects. Reports, prepared by the SWAN consortium, will also be disseminated via the SWAN web-site to events’ prospective participants.
Organisation of concertation workshops, where representatives of the projects dealing with maritime transport operations as well as experts and users will be invited to discuss on broad thematic areas. Indicatively, we could suggest as thematic areas, maritime communication systems, maritime navigation systems, decision support systems and tools, multimedia applications / tools/ services for waterborne transport & port management and information modelling for intelligent ships. Experts will prepare a working paper on state of art to be presented in the concertation event. Representatives of IST relevant projects will be contacted directly. SWAN will provide moderator, rapporteur and additional expertise in agreement with the Commission and will distribute proceedings and minutes with conclusions. SWAN dissemination team will edit and publish a final report on each thematic area.
