Client / User: Kuehne & Nagel Α.Ε
Start / End Date: October 2012 – December 2012
Description
Kuehne & Nagel Α.Ε has already implemented a GIS-based web application to track its trains. The information used within the application now originates from the Rail application which is updated manually by the user. However this is not performed in real time.
Rail wagon monitoring devices will be used in order to overcome the problem. The devices will be installed in each wagon and will send the location information periodically according to a specific protocol. The communication protocol (defined by the device manufacturer) specifies the type and form of communication and information exchanged.
Within the project, the communication protocol with the monitoring device will be implemented in order to obtain the positions recorded from the device and stored in the database of web-based GIS.
The location information of each wagon (as revealed by the monitoring device and is sent using the above communication protocol and stored in the database) will be incorporated in the Internet GIS platform.
In this way it is possible to visualize the actual position of each wagon and provide the means for control and supervision.
The project also includes the support during the pilot operation using a limited number of wagon monitoring devices to address any technical problems.
Within the full implementation of the system all monitoring devices will be used and the positions of the respective wagons will be displayed on the web GIS platform.
role of TREDIT:
– Project Management
– Technical Management of the project
– Development of the communication protocol (between the rail wagon tracking devices and the web application)
– Inclusion and visualization of the location information about the wagons in web GIS application
– Testing and full deployment of the solution
