The Municipality of Xanthi assigned the study in 1997. It aimed in the collection of the required data for the implementation of a parking control system in an urban area.
The basic objectives of the study were the following:
• Identification of the existing parking situation in the study area.
• Identification of the streets which are more appropriate for the introduction of a parking control system.
• Provision of a high service level for all users.
After the analysis of the data collected, the introduction of two different parking zones was proposed:
• Parking Controlled Zone, where the parking conditions would depend on the parking signs.
• Parking Zone for residents only, where the residents would have a special card and would be allowed to park in all streets.

Role of TREDIT:
– Collection of data regarding the directions of the existing roads, the existing traffic lights and the geometrical characteristics of the roads.
– Collection of data regarding the on-street parking supply (legal and illegal).
– Collection of data regarding the existing parking signs.
– Identification of pedestrianization schemes.
– Survey of the parking turnover in specific routes.
– Formulation of parking policies.
