The “Parking Study of the Municipality of Thessaloniki (Phase B’)” was assigned by the Thessaloniki Municipality to the Laboratory of Transport Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and part of it was carried out by TREDIT S.A. Phase B’ constitutes the continuation of Phase A’ of the Parking Study of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, which focused on confronting the parking problem in the city center (A’ borough).
The main objective of phase B’ was to confront the parking problem in the rest four boroughs of Thessaloniki through a retrospection of the parking policy and planning new parking spaces satisfying thus the needs that arise from :
• the parking spaces demand by the bourgeois
• the parking spaces demand by the visitors and employees at the under study area.
Based on the results, the total demand in the four boroughs varies between 73.000 and 78.000 parking spaces while the corresponding offer comes up to 58.000 parking spaces.
The suggestions that were formed by the current status analysis regarding the parking concern the following:
• The parking policy suggestions for the four boroughs. More specifically, suggestions for long and short-term parking by the wayside, citizen card implementation and parking forbiddance and intensification of the parking enforcement.
• Actions were suggested for the Control Parking System implementation based on the experience gained from the citizen card measure implementation in the city center (May 1998).
Through the evaluation procedure of the parking spaces off road, five areas of immediate priority were chosen and for which an analytical technical, economical and traffic study was carried out
