Customer: Civil Aviation Service, Section of Environmental Protection, Greek Ministry of Transport and Communications
Duration: 1995 – 1996
The objective of the study was the estimation of the environmental impacts during the airport’s construction, and also the estimation of the impacts to the physical and the people’s environment during its operation.
During this Study the following tasks were carried out:
• Examination of the meteorological characteristics of the island.
• Identification of the people’s environment.
• Determination of the existing pollution levels.
• Estimations of the environmental impacts during the airport’s operation for three different target years. These impacts were quantified and evaluated.
• Use of models for the estimation of the air pollution levels and the presentation of the curves.
The main findings of this study were the following:
• Estimations of the impacts during the airport’s construction and operation to the water resources of the island.
• Estimations of the impacts to the ecosystem.
• Estimations of the expected air pollution and noise levels.
• Estimations of the visual intrusion and obstruction.
• Estimations of the changes to the land use.
• Proposals of schemes/measures which are required for the decrease of the negative impacts.
