Customer: DROMOS, Hellenic Ministry of National Economy

Duration: January 1993 – December 1994

The aim of the project was to develop a Master Plan for the national transport infrastructure, in such a way as to cover the gap between the planning and design level, and provide the means for the final selections regarding the dimensioning and functional characteristics as a result of a systematic association between the mega and microscale. The study proceeded to a regional review of the Greek area and determined the desired structure, taking into account the inherent geomorphological problems and distortions, the new geopolitical situation and prospects, the economic aspects, and the availability of resources.
Furthermore, passenger and freight traffic was forecasted based on alternative infrastructural schemes, developed within the study, as affected by the operational characteristics of the transport networks and socioeconomic parameters at a national level per prefecture. A number of totally new road and rail facilities, combined transport terminals, as well as upgrading of existing infrastructure were prioritized. The work was used by the government in order to support its claims for financing the infrastructure through the Christofersen Committee and other relevant institutions.
