The mobility problems faced by People with Special Needs in their everyday life in Greece often result in their social isolation and prevent them from living a normal life. Except from the actual mobility problems, another problem is the lack of information regarding accessibility of urban infrastructure. In this way the interested person can not know beforehand if he/she can move from a point of origin to the destination point, neither which actions he/she has to undertake to fulfil this task.
The development of a system for information provision to PSN regarding the accessibility of urban environment is therefore required due to social, economic and humanistic terms. This system can be organized as a GIS database. The user of the database will be able to review the accessibility of specific areas, roads, buildings, transportation means involved in the transportation chain, so that he/she can plan the transportation according to alternative solutions.
The database will be user-friendly both for PSN (considering their special requirements) and for other users. Alternative methods of use of the database will be surveyed, so that it can be accessed by as great percentage of users as possible according to their requirements and their access to information systems (i.e. internet).
Role of TREDIT:
– Development of a system for evaluation of the accessibility of urban environment
– Development of GIS for accessibility information of Athens area
