Customer: EU, DG XIII, Telematics Applications Programme, D.E. 3003
Duration: 1997 – 2000
HOME (DE 3003) aims to develop an integrated user interface allowing elderly and disabled users to tele-operate their home environment (appliances such as TV, VCR, lights, washing machine, oven, doors and windows, heating system and water boiler) by a multimodal remote controller, able to be operated by touch-screen, voice recognition commands based, gesture recognition (GR) and natural language processing (NLP) based input modalities and able to provide visual, audio, earcons, metaphors and synthetic voice feedback. The system will be based on the relevant achievements of HEPHAISTOS (T1004) TIDE project, adding to HEPHAISTOS system new I/O modalities (such as GR and NLP), developing natural and intuitive speech dialogues and controlling new emerging home appliances/ services, such as digital TV. In addition, the user will be able to tele-operate the above home appliances/ services from outside his/her home by a mobile phone based SMS module. Safety and security related aspects are dealt in detail in all development phases and cumulatively at the integration level.
The development of the natural user interface is strictly user oriented. The simulations and prototypes will be evaluated in iterative development circles in three Pilot sites (Greece, France and Germany). Speech dialogues and gestures will derive from wizard of oz trials. The work will be finalised by a long term, continuous assessment.
