Strategies and Integrated Systems for congestion prevention and incident detection in Road Traffic Networks: O-D INformation VS traffic control – ODIN

ODIN

Customer: EEC, DGXIII (DRIVE Programme)

Duration: 1989 – 1991

The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility and the potential applicability of a system for direct (on-line) traffic control based on time depended Origin-Destination patterns.
The main focus of the study was the development of an expert system that will incorporate appropriate algorithms for O-D matrices estimation based on traffic counts.
On the basis of the available technology the background idea of the project was to select the appropriate O-D estimation algorithm and to apply on the basis of a complex expert rules which take as main input the traffic flows that are measured through a system of traffic sensors placed at the approaches of the major intersections. Thus, the calculated O-D patterns can be used for selecting the appropriate control strategy and the traffic light system will be modified accordingly.

Role of TREDIT:
– On-line Traffic Control
– O-D estimation
– Expert systems in traffic control
