This research study was assigned within the framework of the EEC’s DRIVE programme and was aimed at formulating a strategy for Road Freight Operation and Organisation, taking into account the expected developments in the fields of the so called Road Transport Informatics (RTI).
The term RTI is applied for including all the potential applications of telecommunications and information technology for the control and the operation of Road Transport. The work included a thorough description and assessment of the existing situation in Europe (through a questionnaire survey and interviews), formulation of alternative strategies, evaluation, and proposal for functional specifications of specific key functions of the system.
A primary place in the project was given to the review and the evaluation of the existing informatics applications (hardware and software) in the field of road freight. The work undertaken was concluded to the formulation and evaluation of alternative scenarios regarding the degree of penetration of the Road Transport Informatics at the European level and the European policy in this regard.
