THEMIS is a thematic network with main objective the definition of the position of freight transport within Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) by utilizing technologies and applying innovative logistics concepts in order to contribute to a rebalancing and integration of different transport modes into intermodal transport chains. An additional objective is to achieve full and efficient links between freight transport and all the other components essential to the future European ITS.
In the context of THEMIS, the Multimodal Freight Functional Framework (FFF) has been developed by TREDIT, consisting of a Framework of functions and information flows covering the majority of Multimodal Freight Transport activities. FFF is the end result of an extensive review and analysis of freight projects with architectural dimension and its primary objective is to serve as the basis for the integration of Freight Transport Management Systems and Traffic Management System. In addition, this Architecture serves the:
• Identification of functional areas that require further research
• Identification and analysis of gaps and missing links in freight transport
• Validation of the THEMIS Business Cases
• Contribution to standardization issues
FFF effectively integrates business with freight transport activities and aims at playing the role of the Reference Functional Framework in the Multimodal Freight Transport sector.
