Innovative Telematics systems, such as Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), and advanced fleet management applications provide competitive advantages to urban, public transport operators. The implementation of AVL ensures ‘real time’ information, which will facilitate for enhanced service delivery, and vehicle monitoring. Moreover consists the first step towards further deployment of a series of applications, naming just a few: ‘traffic light priority’ and ‘passenger information’.
In the framework of the ‘Strategic Plan for Telecommunications’ program, coordinated by the Greek Ministry of Finance, the public transport operator of the city of Thessaloniki (OASTh) has secured a funding in order to implement and demonstrate a pilot application of an integrated Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and fleet management system.
The pilot application concerns four main bus lines, which comprise of 80 buses. The total budget of the project is 198.500.000 drachmas, while the funding is covering 50% of the above mentioned figure.
The concept for Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) is based on GPS technology. The AVL system provides accuracy of < 15 m regardless of the speed of the vehicle. The data concerning the location of the vehicle along with other relevant information is transmitted to the operator’s control centre through standard radio-equipment.
The fleet management application implemented at the control centre process the raw date from all the equipped vehicles and provides the required information to the responsible personnel.
